Living History Sites
Historica work with Living History sites in several ways.
We consult on Living History Museum interpretation - how to make the best of the artefacts and setting of a living history museum through performances, scripting, authentic props, costume etc. We also provide discrete programs for Living History Museums that enhance existing interpretation activities. For example, a small regular staff of performers can be expanded for a day or a week by larger numbers of reenactors. This adds scale and activity to existing performances and is particularly useful for creating attention to a particular event or to celebrate an anniversary event at the site.
We have surveyed very successful overseas practices at historic sites in Europe and the United States. Living-History practices are very popular with audiences. They are also very effective in conveying and interpreting history in sites that may otherwise have very little difference or ‘signature’. In the United States, the concentration on historically accurate, informed and skilful presentation of the past at such places as Colonial Williamsburg and Plymouth Plantation has set these organizations apart as both profitable and at the head of their field of education and interpretation. Historica’s unequalled knowledge of performative interpretation gives us a wealth of ideas and options to draw on and develop in designing events or displaying artefacts in Living History sites.
